A few things to remember

I broke my glasses this morning, and needed Jen's help in getting to the eye doctor, etc...

While helping me choose my new frames, Lily tried on several pairs. She said one pair made her look "like a professor." A bit later, Ryan says he wants to try on some glasses. He looks in the mirror and very matter-of-factly says something like 'they don't make me look any smarter...because I am already smart'. And from a few feet away, Jen says "..and humble, too!"

Ryan kept telling me he didn't like the frames I was trying on because they didn't look like the ones I had broken. I said 'you don't like change much, do you, Ryan?' He replied, "Not when it comes to you. You are perfect the way you are." Jen and I looked at each other with that 'he is so sweet he just melts my heart' look on our faces.

Magic Show

Tom found an interesting show for the grandchildren at Magooby's Joke House in Timonium. They had magician Peter Wood entertaining for a matinee one Sunday last month. Jen happened to be out of town that weekend for a retreat, so we met Jay and the kids for the show.

Magooby's offered facepainting beforehand. Lily didn't really want her face painted, so it was suggested that she have something on her hand. She liked that idea.

Ryan didn't mind having his face painted.

Lily spent the rest of the day holding her hand like this.

The show was lots of fun. The magician gears things to the age of his audience, so lots of 'kid stuff.' They LOVED it! Ryan and Lily were cackling much like Grandma throughout the show. The magician provided pictures to the kids that could be rolled up and made to look like a magic wand. Cool!
Good job, Grandpa. We had fun!

Whew!

I feel like I have been very busy lately, although I cannot say that I have done all that much. The biggest thing that has happened is that my Mom had major surgery at the beginning of April. She came home from the hospital a week later and has needed assistance from her children since. She IS recovering, but it has been much slower than she expected it to be. As my sister Cathy said, "Thank goodness I am not an only child!" At the beginning, someone was with Mom and Dad from mid-morning until Mom went to bed. That constant care evolved to shorter days, and now Mom and Dad only need help with dinner. I guess the biggest part of all this is that I live an hour away. There and back means two hours on the road about three times a week (sometimes more, sometimes less). Needless to say, Tom has been a champ. We were hardly seeing each other at all for a while there and he was preparing all his own meals so that I could be sure Mom and Dad ate well. Since he works full time, the house is beginning to severely show my neglect. Not a word of complaint from my hubby. He also hasn't complained about my lack of commitment in planning our vacation this year. We have been hoping to go with British friends of ours (I guess that's right--she's a Scot and he's English) somewhere in Europe. I haven't given the planning the attention it deserves, so we may end up doing it another time...

Also during this time, I have been doing a weekly Bible Study through Jen's church that I have really enjoyed. Afterward, Jenny, Lily and I go to lunch, which I really enjoy, too.

My volunteer reading to the preschoolers at the Y Daycare was supposed to end in April, but I have been asked if I would consider doing it on my own. I have done one month on my own, and that went pretty well. Next month we celebrate fathers...

Easter came along two weeks after Mom's surgery. I was hosting the family for the holiday, and Mom had hoped to come but she just was not up to it. Most of the rest of the family came, though, and we had a good day. Mom hated missing it, but it was best that she stay home. Mother's Day came two weeks after that, Janet hosted the family and Mom made it there, about a month after her surgery. She looked great and seemed to be comfortable while I was there. I believe Mom is planning on going on theie annual trip to Deep Creek Lake this summer, too. Go Mom!
