Vacation Preparations

I'm spending the day getting ready for a few days with our daughter and her family, our son, and, of course, Hubby. Details later. I can't wait to see them!
After our break, I will be going north with the kids and DH will return home. My Dad is having some surgery next week and I want to be there for him and my Mom. Since the Family Vacation with Tom's family is so soon afterward, we decided that I will stay up north and Tom will join us, then we'll come home together. I just realized my daughter doesn't know about that... Oops. Better tell her....

Sunday...

Tom wanted to get some hardwoods for his Christmas projects, so after Mass we drove to the Woodcraft Store in Charleston. I knew Tom would be a while, so I walked over to Tuesday Morning and looked around while he shopped. I saw the cutest little sunsuit and hat in pink. Of course I thought of Lily, but it was a newborn size and there weren't any larger ones...so I didn't buy anything. I went back to the wood store, and Tom was just finishing 'looking around' and choosing the wood he planned to purchase. He made his choices, presented the discount card they had sent him for his birthday, and paid. We loaded the car and headed home. We stopped twice along the way -- at a Pawn Shop and an Outlet Center. I was disappointed in both. The Pawn Shop prices were outrageous, with no guarantee once you leave the store. Seriously, you would have to be a jeweller yourself to know if the rings they offered were worth thousands of dollars. The Outlet Center was in the process of failing. About half the stores were empty, and many of the others were closed on Sunday. Actually, I appreciate that some merchants close one day a week. The only place of interest was an Antiques and Collectibles place. We did a lot of looking there, but we didn't buy anything.
Once home, Tom vacuumed the pool bottom and refilled it. We got in together for the first time in two weeks. It felt wonderful!

Happy Birthday, Will!

Today is Tom's youngest sister's oldest boy's birthday! Will is an active boy who enjoys sports (especially football). He is also a great brother to Emily, Sarah and Benjamin. If my calculations are correct, Will is 10 years old today.
I hope you have a terrific birthday, Will!

Friday Night Concert

We decided to go to this concert earlier this week when the Services Squadron sent out an email telling us about a 'free' concert in the nearby city of Camden. Julie Roberts is an 'up-and-comer' in country music and we figured 'why not'? We had some logistics to figure out since Tom was busy cooking at the Junior Enlisted Appreciation Day at Lake Wateree. That's on the other side of Camden from here. It didn't make sense for him to drive all the way home, get me, and go back. So we decided I would meet him at the venue, the Camden Equestrian Center, at about 6:00pm.
I got a phone call in the afternoon from Tom saying meet him at the base and we would drive in together. Seems he had some work to do beforehand, and had left the Lake earlier than he orginally thought. We drove out to Camden, drove up to the gate, showed our IDs...and totally confused the person there. She said "That's $12.00 each, so $24.00." Tom said "I thought it was supposed to be free?" She replied that a military ID got a reduced price. Oh. So Tom paid for the tickets and we parked between the stalls and walked to the open arena for the music. Turns out the event was a combination fundraiser/appreciation of first-responders and the military.
First up was Stand Down Thomas. Their music reminded both Tom and I of Simon and Garfunkel -- except they really emphasized the instrumentals. In 30 minutes they played three songs. I guess they were a good opener since lots of people were still arriving, finding seats, greeting friends and the like. Next up was a local girl, 16 years old, who had recently won an area Talent Contest. I had noticed her in the crowd earlier. She's pretty with gorgeous hair and something that made me notice her. Her name was Lauren B...(can't remember that last name!, it might be Benson). She sang the first line of a popular song and Tom and I looked at each other with a 'wow.' Tom said out loud "She'll make it." The little girl can sing! I was looking for something to have her autograph so I could sell it later when she makes it big! Following Lauren, the emcee introduced a Marine who talked about the military personnel from SC who have given their lives in the War on Terror. Sadly, as he was reading off the names of the seven Marines from South Carolina who have died in Iraq or Afghanistan, the next band was tuning up and doind sound checks, a radio DJ was noisily collecting donations for a paralyzed volunteer firefighter in the crowd, and people were laughing and joking (the laughter wasn't aimed at the deaths, but it was still really inappropriate). The Marine ended his talk with a statement saying the way to honor the sacrifice of these and all members of the military who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom is to enjoy that freedom to the fullest.
Next to perform was a local band (from Sumter, SC) called Black Bottom Biscuits. In listening to this band, I decided they must have taken one of those lists of possible country music titles and written the songs to go with it. Seriously, their song titles include: Too Many Cars in My Yard; Moonshiner's Daughter (she wasn't pretty, but I loved her still); The Cat, This Dog, and Me; The Double Wide that Love Left Behind; Even the Roaches Miss You Since You're Gone; Fish Beer; and I Can Always Count on You (To Let Me Down). They were a lot of fun to listen to -- I swear they took every stereotype about country music and brought it to life!
When it was finally time for Julie Roberts, there was a bit of a delay so they radio DJs got up on stage to entertain the crowd. It went on for so long that it got old...how much of 'spot the members of the audience who look like famous people' can you take? Eventually, Julie Roberts arrived and did her show. She was good -- entertaining and gracious. It started to rain partway through her show, and she was really grateful (and I think surprised) that most of the audience stayed anyway. We enjoyed her music. Afterward, she appeared in the covered arena (where one had to wonder why wasn't the concert held here, out of the rain?) to sign the T-shirts and CDs that her fans bought. She even talked on people's cell phones to whoever was on the other end! Overall, we enjoyed the show and considered it worth the cost -- which we learned from some other milirary folks we met there really was supposed to be free! We just got the wrong person at the gate, it seems. Since the proceeds went to charity, we weren't too worried about it.

Julie Roberts Concert in Camden

Just got back and will post more completely tomorrow -- i just had to post my favorite quote from the evening. It was made by the lead vocalist for Black Bottom Biscuit, one of the opening acts. He said: "We'll be back in Camden in October for the Biscuit, Beans and Barbecue (event) at the Fine Arts Center."
If you didn't know where I lived, I'll bet you could guess!

It's Wednesday Evening....

~Just played three games of Scrabble with DH (Dear Husband) -- lost two. On the second one, I even had a seven letter word, and he still beat me! The nerve. ;)

~Found out at Tuesday's softball game, where CE rallied in the final inning to win 11-8, that we have a graduation dinner Thursday (tomorrow) evening. DH mentioned it when we learned the next game is Thursday evening. We won't be able to go to the game!

~The pool is no longer green but still very cloudy. The chemical the pool store recommended is not working, even after two treatments, so I went out today and got a bottle of flocculent. It makes all the solids that are suspended in the water drop to the bottom. Then you vacuum to clean it out. I guess I have my morning all planned...

Pool problems...

So, while we were away last weekend, the pool turned green on us. :( When I took a water sample to the pool place for some advice, they said "You and everybody else!" I don't know what is in the air around here, but the pool water suffers for it! We have been working to clear the water and we have it no longer green, just cloudy. Since we are expecting a week of temperatures in the 90s, I am hoping to have it swimmable SOON!

Happy 16th Birthday, Evan!

My sister's only child was born today in 1990. Evan has been the light of his parents' life ever since. Janet told me with pride recently that Evan is learning to drive and doing very well. This year, he is lucky enough to be taking a school trip to Germany. Evan, have a great time! Watch out for leftover soccer fans...

Theatre Weekend

Just got back from seeing "Golf ~ the Musical." Funny show. I can recommend it for any golfer or golf widow...even someone who just knows golfers or likes clever musicals. We both had a good time.
Last night we saw "The Leader of the Pack ~ an evening with Ellie Greenwich." Another muscial, celebrating the songs of the 60s written by said Ellie Greenwich. It was fun. We enjoyed most of the songs , at least the ones we remembered. There was one actress who actually turned out to be an actress that I was certain was a man in drag. I think maybe she needs to rethink the makeup or something. Besides the masculine face, she had broad shoulders, big hands and a straight waist. Not a good combination with the wigs and the 60s outfits....

Our weekend in Georgia

This past weekend we decided to take a trip to Georgia to see our friend Grace. We met Grace during our assignment in Belgium. She was involved at the Entertainment Center and that is where we met. We got a little closer when Grace and her husband George took the same trip to Russia that I worked as an Escort for my job there. I always had a good time when Grace was around!
When we left Belgium, it was the people we missed most. Knowing that many of the people we had grown to love would likely never cross our paths again was really hard. So when we learned that Grace was spending some time with her family in Georgia (only six hours away by car) while in transit to her final destination in Nevada we asked if we could visit. Grace seemed pleased by the idea so we went ahead with it.
We arrived in Tifton in Southern Georgia early in the afternoon. Grace had suggested we call when we got into town and she would talk us to her Mama's house. Well, we came in a different way than expected, but Mary Nola (Grace's Mama) was able to 'talk us in.' Honestly, it was a good thing we got held up by a train passing because, while accurate, Mary Nola's directions were very detailed and highly amusing. My favorite? "...then you'll come to a Stop sign. The Post Office is there on the left, but you can't see it." I giggled the rest of the way to the house!
Our first day there, we stayed at the house and visited with Grace and her Mama. The house and garden were just lovely and we enjoyed the tour we were given. We were given the only guest room, where we found a lovely basket to welcome us. Grace's niece helped her get some typical Tifton souvenirs so the basket was filled with peanuts, peanut rolls, peanut logs, peanut crickle (are you sensing a theme here?) as well as Tifton postcards, hatpins, bookmarks, brochures, cups, pencils, pens, note pads, travel soaps, and plastic bags. I'm sure there was more that I will remember later. Wasn't that a kind thing to do? Now we will think of Grace and her family every time we use one of the items they gave us.
Dinner that night was delicious. Grace and her mother collaborated to provide a sumptuous meal of steak, sauteed onions, brocolli salad, potato salad, and deviled eggs. We were joined for the meal by Grace's sister Nola and Mary Nola's friend Betty. Betty brought homemade peach ice cream for dessert. Yum! The company was great and we enjoyed the meal immensely.
Sunday was a leisurely morning followed by a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp with Grace and Nola. Upon arrival, Grace and Nola walked over to a flower bed on the side of the Welcome Center. There was a big sign saying "Alligators may be dangerous" on the fence. Just as they reached the grassy area, Grace nudged her sister's shoulder from behind and Nola screamed. None of us had any idea what was going on until a few seconds later when an alligator came walking out from behind the sign! It didn't bother us, but walked slowly to the water and waded in. I'm sure we'll giggle about that for months.
We went inside and Tom got us all combination tickets for the Train Tour and the Boat Tour. We had to hurry to make the train as we would have to wait two hours for the next one! We saw both tours then walked along the boardwalk where we saw TWO baby alligators swimming in the swampwater. Apparently with babies that small, one can expect the mama gator to be nearby. We looked, but we didn't see her. Later we saw a very well camouflaged gator in a pond. It had so much green gunk on it one barely realized it was there! Lots of gators are there in the Okenfenokee, that's for sure! We also saw a reptile show that was very informative and fun. Nola was frightened of the critters, so the whole audience got a giggle when the wrangler walked among the crowd with a snake and she leaned way back away from it. He was very kind and moved right along. Nola was completely relaxed when he was showing the snake to the folks behind her. Then the whole audience laughed out loud when the wrangler gently touched Nola's shoulder. The poor woman screamed (again). At the end of the show, he called Nola to the front and put his hands over her shoulders while holding a baby gator. Nola was a good sport about it all, but she sure looked nervous!
The next day we had a wonderful breakfast of sawmill gravy and biscuits, scrambled eggs, orange juice and fruit salad. Naturally, Tom didn't eat (he rarely does -- except on Sunday mornings when he makes fabulous omelets for us both) and Mary Nola was surprised that a man with a healthy appetite skips breakfast. I don't get it either, but he has always done so. Not one of us finished what was put on our plates! Afterward, we went to visit Agrirama - an open air museum. Sadly, it was closed on Mondays, so all we got to see was the Peanut Museum and the Welcome Center. At the Welcome Center, we were given peanuts as we entered. Grace noticed the big picture of the outline of the state of Texas on the wrapper and asked why they were giving us peanuts from Texas. The man actually produced packages of Georgia peanuts from under the counter! We really enjoyed the visit and were glad of the opportunity to do it.
We stopped at Grace's favorite BBQ place for lunch before returning to her Mama's place to pick up our stuff and head on home. We wish Grace lots of luck and happiness on her Big Adventure in the Great American West -- but always know you can come home when the mood strikes!

Jammin' July 4th

Yesterday, Hubby and I spent the afternoon and evening working a game booth at the Sumter/Shaw Jammin' July 4th event in Dillon Park. Security issues raised by the attacks of September 11, 2001 mean the base is no longer open to the public for this type of event, so the compromise is the Party in the Park.
It was a pretty nice event. There was a live band called Threshold providing music, and speakers thoughout the park so everyone could hear the music and the announcements. Also available were rides, lots of food, local merchants giving out freebies, and game booths manned by the squadrons and other organizations from the base. We had the Golf Chip booth. The idea was to 'chip' a plastic velcroed golf ball onto a game mat. Where the ball lands determines the prize. It was much harder than it sounds, especially since they put us with the 'kiddie' games, and the club was bigger than many of them! We only gave out about one big prize (a stuffed Tweety Bird) an hour. The booth next to us was much easier -- towards the end of the evening they ran out of their big prize (stuffed Sylvester the Cat) and the organizers raided our stash of prizes -- so two booths right next to each other had the same big prize. I really liked it that each booth had different prizes. I think it's more fun to win different things at different games.
At one point during the day, Tom won a small Teddy bear. When he stopped latern to talk to a colleague, the little girl holding the man's hand reached for the bear. Tom gave it to her. Her whole face lit up! It was very cute. Back at the game booth, Tom had a great time with the kids. Some he instructed, some he teased, some he 'helped' win...he held a ball the same color as the one the child was trying to hit. When the child hit wildly, suddenly a ball the same color as the one they hit landed on the mat and won a prize! Another time, a little girl who kept returning to the game, hoping to win a Tweety, handed over her tickets. Tom asked how old she was, then picked up the tee mat saying 'I'm moving you to the 11-year-old's place.' He started walking across the field until the little girl protested, a big grin on his face the whole time. Another time and adult stepped up to the tee. Another operator asked if he wanted a practice shot. The practice shot landed in the red circle that wins a Tweety Bird. Oh, no, it was a practice shot and didn't count! ...his next two shots didn't come near the target. Tom grabbed a Tweety, said 'I see three balls' and handed it to the guy. One of the other workers said 'A Chief with a heart!' So cute. I love my husband!
After the fabulous fireworks display, the game booths opened again. The idea was to give people an alternative to sitting in the parking lot, trying to escape the crowds of other cars all trying to leave at the same time. We had a few more customers, one or two more Tweety Birds found homes and then it was time to break down. After we did what was expected as booth operators, we found someone to put us to work. We walked around the field, folding up chairs and tables, then following the truck that went around to pick them all up. We left the park just before midnight. We had a good time.

Happy Fourth of July!

Wishing everyone a very happy Independence Day. Don't forget a little prayer of thanks and blessings for all those who helped make your freedom possible.
God Bless America!
